New Sleep Cycle Report: 105 million Nights Reveal a Global Decline in Sleep Quality
Sleep Cycle, the leading sleep technology company, today announces the release of its report Sleep Around the World, revealing a global decline in sleep quality over the past year. The report provides unique insights into how people around the world sleep, how they respond to major global events, and which viral sleep hacks have topped the charts.
The report, released during Sleep Awareness Month, is based on over one million global users who have chosen to share their sleep data, covering more than 105 million nights over the past two years-over 60 million of which are from 2024. This makes Sleep Cycle one of the most comprehensive data sources for statistical insights on sleep. The report analyzes key sleep metrics such as sleep quality, wake-up mood, bedtimes, and self-reported journaling categories, including stress, workouts, and alcohol consumption.
"Understanding the bigger picture of sleep health requires access to vast and diverse data," said Dr. Michael Gradisar, Head of Sleep Science at Sleep Cycle. "With over one million active users contributing real-world sleep data, this report has provided valuable insights into global sleep patterns. It's helped us identify surprising trends and nuances that might otherwise go unnoticed, ranging from disparities in sleep quality to the rise and fall of viral sleep trends."
The report also explores how major global events such as the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris and the 2024 Presidential Election have impacted sleep patterns worldwide, highlighting the interconnected nature of societal events and personal wellbeing.
Key findings from the report included:
- A Global Decline in Sleep Quality: The average slipped from 74.26 percent in 2023 to 73.92 percent (a 0.46 percent decrease) in 2024.
- The Netherlands Ranks #1 in Sleep Quality Again: The Dutch lead the world with an average 79.01 percent sleep quality score, retaining their top spot for the second year running. A balanced lifestyle, consistent sleep schedules, and early bedtimes may all contribute to the Netherlands' ongoing success.
- Japan's Alarming Sleep Quality: With an average score of just 67.39 percent, Japan reported the lowest sleep quality worldwide, closely followed by South Korea at 67.53 percent. Persistent challenges such as high stress, long working hours, and low average sleep durations contributed to the poor sleep quality observed in these countries.
- Women Edge Out Men in Sleep Quality: Women average 76.76 percent in sleep quality compared to men's 74.37 percent-likely linked to going to bed earlier and waking up later.
- Morning mood improves with age. Even though younger people have the best sleep quality, it is in the 65+ age group that mood is the best upon waking (65.67 percent compared to 57.18 percent in the 35-44 age group).
- Mexico: Consistently Happiest Mornings: For the second year running, Mexico boasted the top "happy wake-up mood" at 73.26 percent, reflecting a possible link between sociocultural lifestyle factors and a brighter start to the day.
- Olympic Medals & Morning Mood: In countries like Thailand, a 100 percent boost in medals during the Olympics paralleled a 1.63 percent spike in happy wake-up moods, suggesting even small national wins can elevate collective spirits overnight.
"This report highlights the value of Sleep Cycle's data and reinforces our position as a leader in sleep analysis," says Erik Jivmark, CEO of Sleep Cycle. "The findings provide actionable insights that enable users to improve their sleep while also showcasing our broad capabilities to existing and potential partners."
