Finnair Traffic Performance in January 2025
Finnair Plc Investor News 6 February 2025 at 9:00 a.m. EET
The number of passengers increased and passenger load factor improved despite flight cancellations related to industrial action
In January, Finnair carried 878,600 passengers, which was 6.6% more than in January 2024. Passenger numbers saw good growth in Asian, North Atlantic, and European traffic but declined in Middle Eastern traffic.
Overall capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASK), increased by 2.9%, as additional narrow-body capacity was deployed by Finnair after the wet lease outs to British Airways ended in March 2024. Majority of the additional narrow-body capacity was allocated to routes in northern Europe, resulting in an increase in ASKs in European and domestic traffic. In addition, capacity in North Atlantic traffic grew clearly, driven by added frequencies to Dallas. In Middle Eastern traffic, ASKs decreased due to the end of cooperation with Qatar Airways on flights between Stockholm, Copenhagen and Doha on 15 January. Including wet lease outs, overall capacity increased by 2.9%.
Finnair's traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), increased by 9.3%. RPKs increased significantly in Asian and North Atlantic traffic and saw good growth also in European traffic but declined in Middle Eastern traffic.
Passenger load factor (PLF) increased by 4.3% points to 73.5%. PLF improved significantly in Asian traffic, driven by higher passenger numbers especially in Japanese and Thai routes. PLF developed positively also in North Atlantic and Middle Eastern traffic but declined in European and domestic traffic.
Total cargo tonnes decreased by 9.4%, driven by a decline in Asian and Middle Eastern cargo traffic. Revenue cargo tonne kilometres decreased by 10.7%.
In January, 68.6% of all Finnair flights arrived on schedule compared to 66.2% in the comparison period. On-time performance was negatively affected by difficult weather conditions and industrial action.
Traffic statistics for February 2025 will be published on Thursday 6 March 2025.
