Norrhydro and Aberdeen Dynamics (USA) partner up to bring NorrDigi® MCC technology to the US oil and gas market
Norrhydro Ltd (Rovaniemi, Finland) and Aberdeen Dynamics (Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA) will bring NorrDigi MCC technology to the US oil and gas market by the end of 2024. In the spring of 2024, NorrDigi MCC tests showed great results for a onshore oil rig pipe lifting application. Single pipe lifting cycle times were cut by -50% and movement control was much improved in comparison to the existing system. Adopting at scale will significantly improve productivity and enhance safety in drill rig operations.
Norrhydro and Aberdeen Dynamics will launch NorrDigi MCC technology to the US market by end of 2024. Productivity gains have shown to be radical, with cycle time cut by -50% in pipe lifting application for onshore drill rigs. The results are way beyond anything available in the market, enhancing precision, durability and safety – thus helping rig operators to unlock value beyond drilling operations.
The Norrhydro patented motion control system, NorrDigi® MCC, uses multi-chamber hydraulic actuators with digitally controlled valves to improve system performance. The NorrDigi MCC system validation was done during the spring of 2024 at a test rig in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. The work cycle times improved by -50% compared to conventional hydraulics with excellent maneuverability and soft-end cushioning. Operators on the test rig were praising both fast movement and smooth commands, combined with much-reduced oscillation. Utilizing NorrDigi MCC technology saves time and allows drilling rigs to shift to the next work site much faster. Furthermore, the system reduces downtime for operators.
Smart cylinders and optimized components
Unlike traditional cylinders with two chambers, the NorrDigi digital hydraulic actuators use four chambers. “We use advanced electronic controls and only a fraction of the time and energy for the same movement compared to the traditional hydraulic system,” says Carl Mattson, Digital Business Director of Norrhydro. “This is a great improvement to both control and safety, as movements can easily be programmed by using NorrDigi software,” says Chris Martin, Account Engineer at Aberdeen. The NorrDigi technology will further reduce costs by optimizing components like motors and pumps.
Moving from field test to market launch
Using a drilling rig as a test bed, the NorrDigi MCC technology has passed durability tests and is now moving into the production phase. “The ability to launch NorrDigi MCC in partnership with Aberdeen offers many advantages, including local presence and engineering support in the US market,” says Yrjö Trög, CEO of Norrhydro Ltd. “We see great potential in the US once we get our foot in the door,“ he concludes. Aberdeen Dynamics and Norrhydro Ltd have signed a multi-year agreement for Aberdeen to exclusively represent Norrhydro in the US oil & gas market.
